Optimum Nutrition Magazine-Spring 2009
This was a very special issue of Optimum Nutrition Magazine, as it was the magazine issue to celebrate the charity’s 25th anniversary. Traditionally the front cover had always been an image in relation to one of the main cover features, however, with this issue we decided that the front cover should be bold and use previous magazine covers from the past 25 years to demonstrate to the longevity of not only the charity but its print magazine.
Within this issue I was commissioned to provide copy for the upcoming conference the charity was running, copy to promote the Optimum Nutrition awards and copy to explain the history of of charity.
With the conference copy I wanted to keep it simple and to the point as its purpose was to promote and gain delegates. The same applied with the Optimum Nutrition Awards dinner, but instead as this was a new scheme I also wanted to highlight the reasoning behind the concept and to draw readers to the charity’s website to not only vote for their winners but to find out more on conference and charity’s services.
With the historical article, I was comissioned to write a 1500 word piece looking back over the past 25 years of the charity. The tone of this feature was light and celebratory and also had to focus on the future, discussing where the charity wanted to be in 25 years time.

Optimum Nutrition Magazine Winter 2008
After the changes in the editoral team from the last issue, I once again was comissioned to write the editoral on behalf of the charity. With this issue coming out just before christmas 2008, the news was mainly focused on the impending recession, so in keeping with the news I discussed how the recession could in fact be a positive change for us all.
I wanted to demonstrate how we could all be nutritionally and financially better off by eating properly and economically, and that by doing so we could also be more enviromentally friendly. I also wanted to bring to our readers attention the many benefits of the celebrity endorsed schemes that aimed in teaching people how to do the above .i.e. Jamie Olivers Ministry of Food and highlight that this was also something the charity believed in and provided themselves via their outreach projects, clinics and nutrition education courses.

Optimum Nutrition Magazine Autumn 2008
During the process of putting this issue together there were some changes to the usual editorial team and I was commissioned to provide the editorial copy for the opening page.
This page is a 500 word piece commenting on something close to the charity’s heart, as well as introducing the main feature articles. At the time of writing this piece, Gordon Brown had attended the G8 summit and had urged Britons to reduce their food waste, also the Cabinet Office released The Food Policy Review, so I therefore concentrated on impact of food waste, highlighting the impact it had on environment and the impact it could have on our overall health as well as our finances.
The mission of the charity is nutrition education, therefore I wanted this piece to be informative without being patronising. I wanted to explain how food waste impacted our lives in many ways, as well as highlighting how the charity could help in dispensing advice and offer support to people, helping them to live healthly, as well being environmentally friendly.

RSU-University of Surrey Roehampton, Student Union Freshers Magazine, 2002
I was commissioned in the summer of my second year to write a short feature about my feelings as a fresher for new students starting the University in the summer of 2002. My freshers experience had been slightly different to most new students, in that I never moved into halls but straight into rented accommodation. The editor of the magazine wanted the article to be both personal and helpful to new students who were going experience a similar situation to mine, but to demonstrate that you didn’t need to live on campus to have the same fulfilling experience as a fresher.
